People's reviews about Raccoon Mountain Caverns and Campground:
1) The Raccoon Mountain Caverns were fun and interesting. I visited the site during a camping adventure with my Girl Scout troop in August. We had a fifteen percent discount because we stayed at the campground. The caverns are around fifty-eight degrees year-round, so be sure to bring your jacket. Our tour began almost immediately after we checked in with the cavern employees. The guide who led our group was knowledgeable and injected a bit of family-appropriate humor as we toured. We had ten children and five adults. The children ranged in age from sixteen to four years old. Even my four-year-old enjoyed the tour. He was mesmerized by the unique rock formations. Have you experienced total darkness? Our guide allowed our group to feel it for ten to fifteen seconds. It was peaceful. From “soda straws” to stalagmites, you and any group will not want to miss this almost hour-long tour!
2) My Girl Scout group and I enjoyed our time at the Raccoon Mountain Caverns and Campground. We stayed for a night and visited the caverns, too. The check-in process was easy. The lady at the office was professional, friendly, and efficient. She had a good sense of humor and knowledgeably directed my group to the campsites that would best meet our needs. We reserved four campsites for four Girl Scout families with sixteen people. They were clean and mostly shaded, and my group was placed so we could easily share supplies and interact. We had a code for the bathrooms closest to us. They were clean and had toilets and showers. The men's and women's restrooms were separated by a laundry room. Family restrooms and showers were located next to the office. They smelled new, were air-conditioned, and the showers were great. Families who don't want to separate to take showers, like a mom and a toddler son, would benefit from using these bathrooms. The staff were friendly and efficient, too. At the office, another lady and I ordered firewood for our campsite, and it was there before we pulled up to our sites. Our group played in the pool and at both playgrounds. The pool was warm and had a three-foot section for younger children. I don't think it went any deeper than six feet. No lifeguard was on duty, so we swam with the adults stationed around the pool. The playgrounds were great! One playground sat next to the pool. The children played on the jungle gym, metal slide, monkey bars, and two plastic slides. On the other side of the pool were yard games. We played for a moment before returning to our sites. The other playground had a small tire swing and two other sets of swings. It also had a wavy, plastic slide. We didn't use the basketball court, but one was located next to that playground. Other than the expected noise from the friendly forest animals, we didn't hear noises. A cat visited our site, and we saw a raccoon eating cat food beside the office. Maybe he's the camp mascot! Checking out was simple. Everyone wished us well and did their best to make sure our group had a wonderful time.
